Packing Guide for Lapland, Finland • The Short Version
What to Pack for Winter in Lapland • The Long Version
Alright let’s dig in and figure out just what to wear during winter in Finnish Lapland so you know what to add to your Lapland packing list. Like I said I brought one of these items for myself and all of these items worked in a carryon only packing situation!

Winter Clothes and Wearables
What outerwear and general how-to-keep-warm clothing should you pack for your winter Lapland trip? We’ve got options!
Parka OR a Down Puffer Coat + Raincoat Combo
I brought my parka and that worked perfectly for me, as well as the other layers I list in this Lapland packing list. However, some of my friends on this Lapland winter trip brought a down puffer jacket and partnered that with a raincoat for when it snowed. Both of these worked pretty well and kept us warm on the more frigid days in Lapland, but I don’t think you necessarily need both. So for your Lapland packing list, I’d choose to go either parka or puffer coat/raincoat combo.
I personally lived in this particular Eddie Bauer Sun Valley Down Parka, but will have a few options – male and female versions – below.
But, if you don’t have a parka but have a down puffer and raincoat, go feel free to go with that instead!
Parkas
One of these paired with a mid-layer and a base layer is perfect, and I wore it every day on my trip. It truly answers the “what to wear in Lapland, Finland in winter” question to perfection.
Coat Combos
If you opt not for a parka, a puffer, raincoat, and a mid-layer or two will probably keep you warm enough most days!
Fleece Zip Up (Mid-Layer)
Another thing I 100% lived in – and a must-have for any Lapland packing list – was this Patagonia Better Sweater full zip fleece jacket. It is so warm and I love it so much. I had it layered under my parka every single day, and if you opt for the coat combo this being under your coats would also work well. Having this middle layer between your base layer and your heavy coat is a must when planning for what to wear in Lapland.
Hat & Scarf/Buff or Balaclava
Something you’ll 100% need to add to your Lapland, Finland packing guide is either a hat and scarf/buff or a balaclava, or both. Whether you’re going to go on a husky safari, visit the reindeer, or wander around town late one evening, there’s a high chance your face will get very cold. And that’s where either a balaclava or a hat and scarf is going to come in super handy for you.
Really, you can go with any hat and scarf/buff combo or your favorite – but warm – balaclava, but I’ve got my favorites (of course):
Merino Wool Base Layer
A solid, comfortable, yet warm base layer is super important when it comes to what to wear in Lapland, Finland in winter. I have a couple favorites that I love, and I packed both! I brought 3 of these with me, and these favorite base layers of mine are a must-add to your Lapland packing list.
Fleece-Lined Pants
No Lapland, Finland packing guide is complete without some fleece-lined waterproof pants that will keep you nice and warm. I wore these basically every day, with the exception of times we were just driving to a restaurant or something.
Long Underwear / Leggings
Underneath the fleece-lined winter pants, you’ll need some sort of base pant layer. Leggings or long underwear are perfect for this. I packed like 5 or 6 pairs and the combo was perfect for my Lapland packing list. Depending on how you cold you are, you can get regular or extra warm leggings. I was perfectly fine with standard ones though!
- Women’s standard leggings (on Amazon)
- Women’s fleece-lined leggings (on Amazon)
Snow Boots
Half the reason you are visiting Lapland, Finland during winter is for snow activities surely, so you need a good pair of snow boots to add to your Lapland, Finland winter packing list! I packed a single pair and wore them on the plane, because each of these pairs are super lightweight and comfortable.
Trekking Socks
You’re going to want some trekking or really, really thick hiking socks to keep those little tootsies warm in Lapland, Finland in winter. I’m a huuuuugefan of these Smartwool classic hike extra cushion socks and they’ve kept my feet warm on many a wintery trip, so I would definitely recommend adding them to your winter in Lapland, Finland packing list.
Thick, Waterproof Gloves
Much like potentially cold feet, your hands are definitely likely to get cold fast. So for that, you’ll want to add some thick, waterproof gloves to your winter Lapland packing list.
I would recommend bringing a thick, waterproof pair that has touchscreen capabilities, and potentially a second much thinner pair to wear underneath. Just. incase your hands get super cold! These Eddie Bauer Guide Pro Lite gloves are great, and I loved them.
Other Random, Helpful Things to Pack for Lapland, Finland in Winter
You might not think of these items to add to your Lapland winter packing list, but I definitely would consider bringing them to make your trip even better:
- Quick dry towel just in case you get super snowy wet in the car or your hotel
- Universal travel plugin adapter
- Mini hair bands for my long-haired travelers who don’t want to get birds’ nests built up on the back of your head under hat/scarf; I wore braids a lot
- Car charging port if you’re going to be driving and have multiple things to plug in
So there you go, my winter packing guide for Lapland, Finland! As always, feel free to reach out with any questions you may have, and happy planning! I’m so excited for you to visit Lapland in winter because it’s truly SO gorgeous and you’re just going to love it.
