The Long Version 0f What to Do in Ambergris Caye

There are truly so many things to do in Ambergris Caye, from the gorgeous marine life to the fun party scene to getting to know the local culture or even taking a day trip to Belize’s mainland. This Belize itinerary is going to have a little bit of everything for you to help make the perfect trip.

How to Get to Ambergris Caye

In order to know what to do in Ambergris Caye you first need to know how to get to Ambergris Caye but lucky for you it’s incredibly easy to do. Your international flight should land you in Belize City. From there you have 2 options. can either take a short 15 minute flight via Tropic Air for ~$100We opted for the ferry because it was more economical but it was also super pretty! We were on the ferry multiple times throughout the trip and I think it’s a great way to navigate between the Belize islands and mainland.

Ferry

Take a 90 minute ferry for ~$30! The ferry is actually quite a beautiful ride and of the two, is certainly the more economical choice.

Flight

Take a ~15 min flight! There are a couple of airlines that fly out to the islands (Maya and Tropic Air). You can compare prices here, just change the dates!

What Hotel to Stay At in Ambergris Caye, Belize

I stayed at Bananas on the Beach and it was truly the perfect hotel for this trip and had exactly what I needed for my vacation in Ambergris Caye, Belize. The rooms were nice and my bed was COMFORTABLE which is deeply important after long days. The location was delightful because it was close enough to so much to make the island entirely accessible while also being just enough on the outskirts enough to feel secluded and private. The amenities list includes:

  • Fabulous concierge staff who booked our excursions
  • Beachfront location with ocean view rooms
  • Two pools and a pool bar (which also serves delicious breakfast)
  • On-site spa
  • Golf cart rental
  • The restaurant Gonzalo and the Princess is INCREDIBLE (I ate here 3x, no joke)

Things to Do in Ambergris Caye

Alright now let’s get into all of the fun activities and excursions you can add to your Belize itinerary!

Cooking Class

This excursion was an absolute sleeper hit of my Belize itinerary, and I highly recommend taking a cooking class while visiting Ambergris Caye.

We spent three hours making ceviche and pupusas, as well as taste testing other local cuisines and honestly it was so much fun. And if you’ve never had ceviche or pupusas, Belize has some of the best of both I’ve legitimately ever had. So you’re in good hands when it comes to learning how to cook these awesome dishes.

Day Trip to Mainland to Visit Mayan Ruins

So you might be thinking “well I’m staying on one of the Belizean islands not the mainland so I can’t see any of the Mayan temples found in Belize” and you would be WRONG for that thought. You can absolutely book a day trip to the mainland and add it to your Ambergis Caye, Belize itinerary. And dare I say, if you have the time, you should.

Lamanai Archaeological Reserve

On my first trip to Belize I did this day trip out to Lamanai Archaeological Reserve and let me tell you what, it was super amazing. Here you can find out more about the trip as a whole, but if you like history and nature, this is a trip you’ll love.

You will get picked up from San Pedro on Ambergris Caye and taken care of for the whole day. This is a perfect excursion, especially if you’re the type who likes to balance beach days and adventure days on your trips.

Mayan Temple, Cave-Tubing, & Zipline

I haven’t personally done this specific excursion but I have friends who did and they LOVED IT.

This is a super adventurous day filled with exploring historic Mayan ruins, then tubing through caves, and ziplining through the rainforest. Again if you’re an adventure lover, this Belize excursion from Ambergris Caye is going to be one you’ll love!

Snorkel at Hol Chan Marine Reserve

I have done two snorkeling trips in Hol Chan Marine Reserve and it is one of my top three snorkel spots in the world. It is a MUST-ADD to any Belize itinerary, and I will die on that hill.

Why is this Belize snorkel spot so good and a mandatory thing to do on Ambergris Caye? For a few reasons:

  • The assortment of wildlife; there are a ton of species here and I personally have seen manatees, eagle rays, sting rays, moray eels, an octopus, barracudas, nurse sharks, and more.
  • The visiblity of this area is insane. The water is sooo clear because of all the sea grass and it’s also insanely shallow meaning you get an absolutely excellent view of the wildlife.
  • Hol Chan Marine Reserve contains part of one of the biggest barrier reefs in the world, so witnessing the coral, plants, and wildlife living in it is magical.
  • There’s a spot called Shark Ray Alley that was formerly where fisherman would go to clean their fishing gear. This attracted nurse sharks, and now they come around whenever they see boats (and often some boats will throw some sardines in for them).

I’ve done a standard snorkeling tour as well as this specific sunset tour, and I highly recommend either. Just, if you love wildlife and snorkeling, snorkeling in Hol Chan Marine Reserve MUST be added to your Belize itinerary.

Beach Club Hop at Secret Beach

If you’re a fan of a beach club, I’ve got to introduce you to the worst kept secret on Ambergris Caye, Secret Beach. This is the farthest away activity we did from our hotel, but it was SUCH a fun golf cart ride and the destination was so worth it.

Secret Beach has a number of beach clubs, cabanas, and restaurants and makes the perfect day trip if you want to have a cocktail on the beach. If you love a beachy vibe with a beachy drink, definitely add Secret Beach to your Belize itinerary.

Here you can check out all of the different properties along Ambergris Caye’s (not-so) Secret Beach:

Other Tips for Ambergris Caye

Now that we’ve got your Ambergris Caye, Belize beach itinerary stacked, I’ve got a couple of tips for you to help make your stay on this gorgeous Caribbean island even better:

  • Definitely rent a golf cart! Driving around with a golf cart is the easiest way to get around the island as well as being just, a super fun time. You can rent it straight from the Bananas on the Beach hotel which makes your whole stay even more convenient.
  • Keep an eye on the weather throughout the day. This is an island in the Caribbean and it’s highly possible some rain might swoop in, which is to be expected! So keep an eye out so you know when the rain is coming and don’t find yourself driving in it in your golf cart, for example.
  • Don’t forget mosquito repellent and keep it on you at all times. I’ve used these mosquito bracelets in the past and had good success with them!
